Flagship Project --- ISDM Society “Logic Model Working Group”

Overview

In its current state, research on shared decision-making (SDM) appears heterogeneous due to different concepts, definitions and research approaches within the published literature. Hence, critics might perceive SDM as eclectic.

Our Logic Model Working Group was launched at the 2024 ISDM Conference in Lausanne. We aim to describe the different goals, diverse interventions, influencing factors, the outcomes and their causal relationships within the SDM-literature through a “living” logic model.

What is a logic model?

A logic model is a systematic, visual representation that illustrates the relationships among a program’s resources, activities and outputs alongside the short-, medium-, and long-term outcomes it aims to achieve. It serves as a roadmap that clarifies how and why a program or intervention is expected to work, thereby supporting stakeholders in planning, implementation and evaluation.

Why a Logic Model?

  • Orientation: Guide researchers and practitioners through a complex SDM-landscape
  • Integration: Synthesize published and grey‑literature models into a single adaptable model or framework
  • Evolution: Remain ‘living’ by continuously incorporating new evidence and expert insights

Note: This logic‑model group runs in parallel with the Core Outcome Set initiative, ensuring alignment between what we develop, model and measure.

Our process

  1. Collection of logic models around SDM (in published and grey literature) (ongoing)
  2. Synthesis modeling and publication of Version 1.0
  3. Iterative feedback loops respecting stakeholders with different backgrounds
  4. Feedback incorporation into Version 2.0
